The 1st South Wales Borderers battalion of 3 Brigade, 1st Division arrived in France in August, 1914 and were involved in much of the fighting that year, including the battles at Mons, Le Cateau, the Aisne and in October and November, the First Battle of Ypres. Harry Smith died from wounds on 9th November, 1914 and is buried in a cemetery in Kortrijk which was in German hands throughout the first four years of the war. This means that he was almost certainly a prisoner of war at the time of his death but there is no information as to when and where he was wounded and captured.
